Old people
Nohant. Chopin in his letter to Julian Fontana: "I will manage somehow. – My old saying. The time is flying, world is passing, death is chasing us, my manuscripts are chasing you. […]. Don’t you worry about my apartments, nor about my den, nor about anything. Tomorrow I will take care of it myself and I will not bother you anymore. It is a revanche, if one day you will need similar proofs of my friendship. We will meet as old people and we will sing "Long live Krakowskie Przedmieście! To the melody by Bogusławski with the tenor voice of Krzysztofowicz, and with the accompaniment by late Lenz."
Wojciech Bogusławski (1757-1829) mentioned in the letter was the founding father of the Polish theatre. He influenced the development of the Polish opera, he wrote librettos. He wrote two first Polish vaudevilles: "Poverty Delighted" (pl. "Nędza uszczęśliwiona") with the music by Maciej Kamieński and "Assumed Miracle that is Krakovians and Mountaineers" (pl. "Cud domniemany, czyli Krakowiacy i Górale") with the music by Jan Stefani. By writing "to the melody by Bogusławski" Chopin probably alludes to folk motifs from the "Assumed Miracle"…
